Who Moved my Cheese? Let’s Accept Change in our Life

Let’s get it straight: change is inevitable. It can either be a blessing or a curse, depending on our perspective. Since change happens either to us or by us, what matters most is the attitude we have about change, as put rightly by Alan Watts, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance”.

This is the post by Keshav Aggarwal who read an amazing self-help book, ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ and while giving away the gist as, “We should let go off old cheese so that we can enjoy new cheese”, thought of sharing the gem of adjusting attitude towards change in life.

Cherish Change as Cheese Moves

Cherish Change as Cheese moves

The moment I gave a read to ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’, I wasn’t sure that I’m going to be the one who will read it till the end. My thoughts were convincing me with every possible reason that why this story is just not for me. Nevertheless, I turned the first page and then second, then third, fourth, fifth, and I got carried away in full swing with the waves of the ocean roaring in the story.

The story ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ is, for sure, not about the mice and the ‘littlepeople’. It’s about us; the storyline co-relates with our understanding about a certain situation; and Mr. Johnson puts everything together very beautifully so that we can find ourselves in every area of the story.

Right from choosing the title and the beginning to the interlocking of the story inside a story and then serving the cheese, the concept of the story is simply commendable. By the way, I’m not going to tell you the story here, not only because I want you to read it by yourself but also because Mr. Johnson is far better in story-telling than I am and ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ is the proof.

Anyway, as soon as I got to the main course of the story after winning over my thoughts, characters started whirling in some corner of my mind. However, it was not because of the characters that I kept on reading but because the main course of the story was so relatable to my life.

I found that somehow and somewhere, we all get stuck in the same situation where we don’t accept the changes taking place around us. We choose to ignore the changes. Sadly, even though we know, every time, that the things are turning around yet we don’t just accept it. I agree there could be reasons for the rejection. Nevertheless, I believe that it is change that keep us in our business. I believe that nothing is permanent in this world but the change. And changes are likely to affect our daily lives.

We can be like Hem and Haw, the ‘littlepeople’, who turned a blind eye to the decreasing cheese level and believed situation will remain the same. We too feel that nothing can happen to us; no wind can blow our shelter away; or that we are immovable. However, these all are just excuses which are good as long as we wish to convince ourselves. And, when our shelter goes away, we outrage, get angry, and tend to blame everybody around us except ourselves.

On the other hand, we can be like Sniff and Scurry, the mice, who always kept an eye on the amount of cheese in the cheese station and accepted the situation. They always knew that soon there would be no more cheese and they would have to move to another place to feed on cheese. Thus, as there’s no better way to combat at once; it’s always better if you keep your eyes wide open and keep checking off your priorities.

Whether we be like the ‘littlepeople’, being unwary and ignoring change, or we be like the mice, accepting and embracing change, outcome is going to be the same – cheese is bound to end; change is bound to occur.
